THE airport in Urumqi, the capital city of Xinjiang, is to be expanded at a cost of CNY42.1 billion (US$8.3 billion) with construction slated for completion in 2030 when the gateway is expected to handle 750,000 tonnes of air freight and 63 million passengers per year.
The upgrade includes the construction of two additional runways, according to the National Development and Reform Commission. It said the airport's expansion is aimed at accommodating rapid aviation growth in the province and spurring the growth of an international aviation hub in Urumqi.
The investment value is equivalent to half of what China is spending on Beijing's new mega airport project - Daxing International Airport - that costs CNY80 billion and will serve 72 million passengers a year by 2025, reported Reuters.
Urumqi airport, the home base of China Southern Airlines, already serves flights to and from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Russia and the United Arab Emirates.
Oil- and mineral-rich Xinjiang has seen infrastructure construction spring up across the region in recent years, as it is considered to be a key node in China's One Belt One Road (Obor).
The central government is also investing heavily in the country's western regions to ease poverty and better integrate them into the national economy. Economic growth in these parts slowed in the first half of the year, mainly due to a decrease in fixed asset investment.
While Xinjiang is the biggest among China's provinces and autonomous regions by area, its CNY1 trillion economy ranks among the smallest.
