HUTCHISON Ports Thailand welcomed the country's first ever 14,000-TEU ship to call at its Terminal D facility at Laem Chabang Port, reported London's Container Management.

The 14,053-TEU ONE Columba, owned by Ocean Network Express, has a length of 364 metres, breadth of 51 metres and a gross tonnage of 145,647 tonnes.

Hong Kong's Hutchison Ports said the new facility will be an integral part of Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) under Thailand 4.0's objective to modernise the economy through improved infrastructure and innovation.

The terminal operator deployed new remote-controlled quay cranes in order to handle 2,269 containers loaded to the vessel in a fast, accurate and safe manner.

An initial phase of Terminal D will become fully operational in early 2019 and, upon full completion, the facility will have a total quay length of 1,700 metres adding a further 3.5 million TEU of capacity.

It will become one of the world's first container terminals where all the quay and yard cranes will be using remote control, with all 17 super postpanamax quay cranes and 43 electric rubber tyre gantry cranes (e-RTGs) using the technology.

Terminal D aims to offer more choice and flexibility as well as improved efficiency and productivity as it will be able to handle some of the largest vessels currently in operation.
