Best October box imports sets Oakland on track for 3rd straight record year

THE US port of Oakland handled 250,686 TEU of loaded import containers between August and October, breaking the previous peak season import record of 233,825 TEU set in 2017 over the same period when the nation's retailers build inventories for holiday merchandising.

The port attributed the rise in container throughput to two factors. First, strong US consumer spending and, secondly, US shippers accelerated cargo growth by rushing imports of Chinese goods into the country ahead of the next wave of tariffs.

"We're pleased by our peak season figures," maritime director John Driscoll was quoted as saying in a report by American Shipper. "Now we'll see how tariffs affect future trade flows."

The port handled 82,397 TEU of loaded imports last month, making it the busiest October in the port's 91-year history. The record figure represented a year-on-year increase of 7.4 per cent.

Total volume - imports, exports and empty containers - was up 3.9 per cent in the first 10 months of 2018. The port noted that if this trend continues, Oakland would set a new cargo volume record for the third year in a row.
