FRENCH engineering firm Egis has been appointed as a consultant to provide design and supervision services forBahrain Airport Company's new BD22 million (US$58.5 million) cargo facility that will feature warehouses, aircraft parking and associated infrastructure on a site located north of the international airport's runway.
Bahrain's Transport Minister Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed said the new cargo hub will play an important role in stimulating the aviation sector's growth and become a "key component" of the Airport Modernisation Programme (AMP), which is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2019.
It is also a part of the airport operator's ongoing work to improve the kingdom's aviation infrastructure in order to meet rising local and regional demands, reported London's Air Cargo News.
The new cargo area will be equipped with the latest technology to enhance Bahrain international airport's (BIA) cargo handling capabilities and better cater to express customers. The airport's 24-hour air cargo terminal currently handles 38,000 tonnes of airfreight per year.
The minister was quoted as saying: "This capacity increase will allow the airport to handle larger numbers and volumes of shipments, creating new jobs in the process.
"This is also in line with government-led initiatives aimed at expanding the kingdom's logistics sector, which began in 2015 via the Bahrain Logistics Board, chaired by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa."
