Teamsters back congressional bill to ban lease-to-own truck contracts

SOUTHERN California harbour truckers of the Teamsters union, declared their support for the proposed "Port Drivers' Bill of Rights Act", from two Democrat members of Congress.

Part of the proposed legislation would stop truck drivers signing lease-to-own contracts, and instead have them treated as regular employees rather than independent operators.

California Congresswoman Grace Napolitano and New York Congressman Jerrold Nadler also announced two bills that will empower local ports to reduce environmental pollution, mitigate traffic congestion, improve highway safety and improve efficiency.

Mrs Napolitano's rights bill would create a commission to review the system and "crack down on bad actors".

Mr Nadler's "Clean Ports Act" would change federal trucking rules to allow local ports to require ports address truck pollution and congestion at such facilities.

Said Teamster vice president Fred Potter: "For years, port truck drivers have been forced to work long hours, often exceeding maximum hours of service set by the US, to pay to lease and maintain their truck."
