BRUSSELS Airport's cargo volume rose by 8.3 per cent in 2017 compared to the previous year to 535,634 tonnes, achieving its highest volume in a decade after all freight segments registered growth.

Bellyhold cargo rose by 13.8 per cent year on year, integrator services were up 9.7 per cent, and the full-cargo segment registered three per cent growth due to a strong first quarter and "good" volumes in November and December, reported London's Air Cargo News.

Head of cargo Steven Polmans said: "Despite some noise issues we had in Q2, resulting in a few airlines leaving the airport, we are very pleased to see that growth picked up again by the end of the year still resulting in overall growth," in the cargo segment.

Export volumes drove growth with an increase of 16 per cent: "We have seen a remarkable increase in our volumes to especially the Far East and South America, supported by a strong performance of the European and Belgian economy," said Mr Polmans, adding that the volume of pharmaceutical products increased by 18 per cent last year.

Brussels airport management expects cargo volumes to "continue performing strong in all segments" in 2018.

Cathay Pacific will start Airbus A350 passenger operations to Brussels this year, and Amerijet has announced the launch of a full cargo service operated by a Boeing 767 freighter from Brussels to Miami.
