TANZANIA has suspended the registration of foreign vessels after drugs were discovered stashed on vessels flying the country's flag.

President John Magufuli has ordered an investigation into the 470 ships currently registered as Tanzanian to ascertain their activities and determine whether they were adhering to regulations.

"We cannot allow the name of our country to be tarnished by individuals pursuing their selfish interests," Mr Magufuli, reported Agence France-Presse.

The president last week withdrew Tanzania's flag from two vessels seized carrying drugs and arms in recent months.

Tanzania was found to be the second worst globally and rated "high risk" by the Paris MoU organisation in its last annual "White, Grey and Black list" that ranks the quality of countries' flags for shipping.
