THE Port of Oakland handled 612,151 TEU in the first quarter, marking a year-on-year increase of 4.2 per cent.
In March the port's container throughput rose by 10.7 per cent compared to the same month a year earlier to 213,972 TEU, with loaded exports up 7.6 per cent.
The strong performance comes amid shipping industry concerns that a recent import surge by retailers trying to bulk out their inventories - triggered by the Trump administration's threat of ramped up tariffs on Chinese imports - has cooled, Maritime Logistics Professional reported.
"Though the import rally has calmed down, we are still seeing a strong consumer demand in northern California and western Nevada," said port of Oakland maritime director John Driscoll. "The Bay area's strong consumer-based economy has helped the port of Oakland absorb the impact of the weakening rally better than other ports."
