HUTCHISON Ports Sohar has reached a new productivity milestone using its new remote-controlled super post-panamax quayside gantry cranes by achieving an average gross crane rate (GCR) of 38 moves per hour and a high of 52 moves per hour when serving three vessels over a recent two-week period.

The terminal operator said that productivity compared with earlier generation cranes is 40 per cent higher, reported Dubai's Maritime Standard.

"The state-of-the-art systems will increase the terminal's handling capacity and facilitate growth of Oman through fast turnaround times," said Hutchison's Sohar operations chief Anacin Kum.

Hutchison Ports Sohar is a joint venture between Hutchison Ports, the government of the Sultanate of Oman, Steinweg of the Netherlands and a number of well-established Omani investors.

Its terminal C facility in Sohar port features 970 metres of quay with an 18-metre draft alongside. Equipment includes 11 quayside gantry cranes and 36 rubber-tyre gantry cranes (RTGs). Current annual capacity is 1.6 million TEU.
