HAMBURG's Becker Marine Systems says the IMO 2020 sulphur cap is driving increased demand for its 10-year-old fuel saving product the Becker Mewis Duct.

"Among its customers, CMA CGM is fitting the Becker Mewis Duct to its 22,800-TEU containerships being built in China," said the company, reports Colchester's Seatrade Maritime News.

The company says owners are opting to retrofit Mewis Ducts to improve fuel consumption thereby reducing costs just when most owners, apart from those fitting scrubbers, expect to face higher costs from January.

"By employing the Becker Mewis Duct, consumption is lowered by an average of six per cent for both empty and fully loaded ships," said Becker Marine managing director Dirk Lehmann. "Reductions are often higher for older ships," he added.

Delivery time is three months, plus one week in the shipyard for retrofitting. To date the company has sold 1,000 units and claims a reduction in CO2 emissions of more seven million tonnes from duct-equipped vessels.
