THE 14th Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention concluded recently without mandating a ban on the cross border sale and shipping of recyclable electronic waste.
A full prohibition was staved off by US, European Union, Australia, Switzerland and Canada, whose electronic manufacturers say their shipments are recyclable "repairable"
Eco-groups, led by Seattle=based Basel Action Network (BAN), oppose to the exemption saying that it deregulates the toxic e-waste trade. The exemption allows traders to claim their exports were for repair, and not waste.
