CHINA's ban on waste paper and plastic imports is expected to cost container lines five million TEU a year - not to mention the extra expense of re-positioning transpacific and Asia-Europe backhaul boxes.

London's Drewry Maritime Advisors notes that in 2016, China imported 30 million tonnes of waste paper and eight million tonnes of waste plastics.

The ban has already caused the creation of mountains of waste products in the US, Japan and Europe as dealers struggle to find alternative recycling facilities.

One in-depth report claims the ban could create crises around the world equivalent to a major natural disaster, according to London's Loadstar.

Drewry estimates that worldwide unsorted paper imports to China were in the region of 500,000 TEU in 2016, while the still-legal other types of waste paper added another two million TEU.
