THE reefer terminal at the Port of Genoa-Savona has changed hands from the VRSAR Group to Maersk's APM Terminals, reported the Netherland's Fresh Plaza.

However, the terminal will continue operating within the new container platform that is under construction in Vado Ligure, said the report.

The terminal that has an annual container handling capacity of 400,000 TEU will operate in synergy with the platform when it's built. Meanwhile, the reefer terminal in Vado is currently serving as Savona's container terminal.

Vado's reefer terminal is the first in the Mediterranean to serve the fruit trade, which rose from 85,000 tons in 1982 to 500,000 tons in recent years. Half of its volume comprises bananas and pineapples, while the remainder is made up of citrus fruits and other fruit from South Africa, West Africa, Central and South America and New Zealand.

The terminal has a total of 24,000 square metres of refrigerated warehouses, divided into 15 temperature-controlled cells and four air-conditioned areas with a storage capacity of 13,000 pallets. The main wharf is 465 metres long with a depth of 14.5 metres, while the storage yard has a capacity of 10,000 TEU.
