GERMAN shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd has announced that seven, older 4,101-TEUer will be recycled in an acceptible "eco-friendly manner, reports American Shipper.

The seven, 4,101-TEU containerships are being scrapped in Turkey and China, where breakers yards are certified to "recycle ships in an environmentally friendly manner", the company said.

The seven ships include the Al Abdali, Al Farahidi, Al Rain, Asir, Deira, Fowairet, Najran, Sabya, Sakaka and Sudair.

"The recycling of these ships is part of the restructuring of our fleet," said Hapag-Lloyd chief operating officer Anthony Firmin.

"Since the merger with UASC [United Arab Shipping Company], we boasted about having one of the youngest fleets in the industry," he said.

That's because Hapag-Lloyd recycled three older vessels in September 2017, also with capacity of 4,101 TEU each. The three vessels were part of the former UASC fleet.
