CMA CGM has taken delivery of its new flagship, the 20,600-TEU CMA CGM Antoine de Saint Exupery, the first of three containerships of this size on order. SaturdaThe newbuild is scheduled to commence service on February 6 on the Asia to north Europe service, branded the French Asia Line (FAL 1).

The weekly service calls at 16 ports during an 84-day round trip.

The ship is the world's biggest to fly the French flag and is a "strong symbol of the group's dynamism and development," the company said, adding that the vessel is 400 metres long and 59 metres wide.

Longer than four football pitches, the box ship is bigger than The Empire State Building and the Eiffel Tower. Its capacity is equivalent to 123 kilometres of containers.

The ship is built using technology that improves the propeller's performance to help reduce energy expenditure for a four per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Its engine also reduces oil consumption by 25 per cent and fuel consumption for a three per cent average reduction in CO2 emissions.
