SEVEN cargo bridges are to be built in the Port of Baku on the Caspian Sea from January to March, says Azerbaijani Economy Minister Shahin Mustafayev, reports the national Trend news agency.

While oil exploration has made the Caspian sea more than the backwater it has been, the fall in crude prices has diverted energy explorers away in recent years. Though with the recent rise in oil prices, interest in the Caspian Sea is expected to revive.

Add to that there is much hope that China's Belt and Road Initiative will back what promoters call "Middle Corridor" or "New Silk Road", which would create a new route from China that departs from course of the EU-bound trains at Khorgos and then heads east and south, first to the Kazakhstani Caspian seaport of Kirk.

Here freight would be loaded on a ship to cross the sea to Azerbaijan's capital of Baku, and from there it would go by rail to the Georgian Black Sea Port of Anaklia and thence to it wanted to go.

Mr Mustafayev made his remarks at an expanded meeting dedicated to the results of 2017 and forthcoming tasks in Baku port on January 24.

"Warehouses, additional buildings and other facilities are planned to be built till March," he said. "Moreover, the operational building of the Port of Baku is planned to be constructed in May."

In total, up to 1,500 people are involved and almost 300 units of various construction equipment are used in the construction work.

The minister added that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev attended the opening ceremony of the ro-ro terminal in the Baku port, which is capable of receiving 1.8 million tons of cargo per year, in January 2018.

Mr Mustafayev said that upon the president's decree, the first phase of the construction work was planned to be completed last year.

After the completion of the first phase of construction, the Baku International Sea Trade Port will be able to receive up to 10-11 million tons of cargo per year, and handle up to 50,000 TEU annually.

The second stage of the project envisages the construction of three more cargo berths in the port, while two additional cargo berths will be built at the third stage.
