INLAND navigation could play a crucial role in creating a sustainable, multi-modal transport system in the Baltic Sea region. This opportunity will be explored during a conference on inland navigation and river-sea-shipping markets at the Nordic Embassies in Berlin on February 21.
Jointly organised by project EMMA and the Chamber Union Elbe/Oder, the conference will provide a platform for government, industry and inland navigation representatives to exchange their knowledge and experiences.
Increasing the modal share of inland navigation within the European transport system would help to handle the expected growth in freight volumes. Using environmentally-friendly inland shipping for freight transportation is a means to reduce transport costs and emissions and decongest roads, a statement from the organisers said.
Despite the high potential of inland waterway transport, it currently only has a six per cent share of freight volumes in the European Union.
The conference will host panel discussions to debate the challenges and opportunities of inland navigation and river-sea-shipping. The panellists will focus on the development of infrastructure and technical solutions to overcome challenges for inland shipping, the modernisation of the existing fleet, and the new propulsion system technology that can contribute to greening of the fleet.
The Interreg project EMMA has joined forces from Germany, Poland, Sweden, Lithuania and Finland to enhance inland navigation in the Baltic Sea region. EMMA is funded by the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme 2014-2020 and is a flagship project of the EU's strategy for the Baltic Sea region in the transport policy area.
