WAR risk surcharges for cargo moving in and out of the Arabian Gulf are being introduced by Hapag-Lloyd andMaersk Line, a decision prompted by the attacks on six tankers in the region in the last two months.

Both container shipping lines are charging surcharges of US$42 per TEU for shipments destined for the Middle East, an amount that Singapore's Splash 247 said is the highest recorded to date.

These latest surcharges follow CMA CGM's implementation of a surcharge of $36 per TEU and Mediterranean Shipping Company's (MSC) surcharge of $40 per TEU.

The surcharges will be levied on cargo from/to and via Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia Eastern Province Ports Dammam & Jubail and the UAE.

For China the surcharge will be effective from August 1, and for US/Canada cargo covered by the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) contracts the starting date has not yet been published.
