THE Port of Houston handled more tonnage that ever last year with 38.3 million tons crossing the docks, a attainment which included a box volume record, increasing 13 per cent year on year to 2.46 million TEU.

Last year all the port's business lines saw solid growth. Highlights of the operational results were announced during the port commission's first meeting of the year.

In a report to the commission, executive director Roger Guenther further detailed achievements in 2017, including a 99 per cent uptime in reliability for 22 ship-to-shore cranes and extending gate hours for truckers, as well as success for its foreign trade zone (FTZ) #84 programme.

With the strategic goal of providing infrastructure to meet demand, Mr Guenther said the port brought to substantial completion US$200 million worth of construction contracts. Among these projects were the completion of both container yard six north and south including gantry cranes at Bayport container terminals.

At Barbours Cut terminal, improvement works at wharf two were completed and made at its east end, while three new super post-panamax STS cranes were received.
