NY/NJ is US 3rd busiest port with record volume of 6.71m TEU

CONTAINER throughput at the port of New York and New Jersey rose to an all-time high of 6.71 million TEU in 2017, topping the previous annual record set in 2015 by 5.3 per cent. The strong performance means the port has held on to its ranking of third busiest in the US after Los Angeles and Long Beach.
The port of New York and New Jersey garnered a 15.4 per cent market share last year in the US and was the leading port on the east coast with a 32 per cent share, reported American Shipper.
China remained the port's top trade partner, with imports amounting to 1.05 million TEU. Following China was India with import volumes of 210,811 TEU, and Germany with 197,363 TEU. The leading import commodities included furniture, appliances and beverages.
The number of containerships calling at the port fell to 2,011, down from 2,184 calls in 2016. "The fewer vessel calls illustrate that much of the containerised cargo coming into the port is arriving in larger more environmentally-friendly ships, a trend the port expects will continue now that the Bayonne bridge has been raised," port authorities said in a statement.
The completion of the bridge heightening project in June 2017 now allows vessels of up to 18,000 TEU to sail to port facilities in Newark, Elizabeth and Staten Island. CMA CGM has already launched a new service to the port operated by 14,000 TEU ships.
In addition to containerised cargo, the port recorded a 14.3 per cent increase in imported vehicles to 577,223 units in 2017.
ExpressRail, the port's ship-to-rail system serving New York and New Jersey marine terminals, also set a new record in 2017, handling 567,649 container lifts, a 5.1 per cent increase over the previous year. ExpressRail accounted for 14.8 per cent of all container lifts at the port last year.
