HONG Kong-based ship owner, Seaspan Corporation, has purchased two 2006-built geared 2,500 TEU containerships and signed an agreement to charter the vessels to Maersk Line at a fixed rate for four years, with options for up to additional two years at increasing charter rates.
Seaspan has already taken delivery of one of the vessels and expects to take delivery of the second ship by the end of February.
Upon delivery of both vessels the company's operating and managed fleet, including newbuilds, will rise to 112 vessels, of which 18 vessels will be in Seaspan's managed fleet.
"We have proven our ability, throughout the industry cycles, to grow our fleet and expand our relationship with the world's largest liner company. Seaspan remains focused on providing best in class solutions and expanding our value-added service offerings to our customers," said Seaspan chief executive officer Bing Chen.
"Given our solid balance sheet, talented employees and operational strength we are well positioned to capture growth opportunities in today's market and reinforce our industry leading position," he added.
