INTERNATIONAL Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) has announced that the second development phase of its new multi-purpose Basra Gateway Terminal (BGT) at the port of Umm Qasr in Iraq is "well underway".
The company has invested heavily in new terminal infrastructure and container handling systems at the port. Upon completion of the second expansion phase, ICTSI will have invested US$250 million mainly to build a new berth, yard and purchase new handling equipment in order to boost annual capacity to one million TEU.
The second phase of the expansion project will be completed in stages by the third quarter of 2019 and will deliver 400 metres of new quay with a draft of 14 metres, alongside a new 30-hectare yard area and a 15-hectare secure parking area.
Three post-panamax ship-to-shore cranes will be installed along the quay and the yard area will be equipped with seven rubber-tyred gantries (RTG). The terminal will be able to handle containerships of up to 9,000 TEU.
In the first quarter of 2017, BGT completed the first phase of its greenfield terminal project, which included the construction of a new 250 metre berth and a 15-hectare yard area.
Last year also saw BGT's expansion of its service portfolio with the development of quay and yard areas configured for the handling of oil and gas project cargoes. Operations at berth 21 commenced in January 2018 with a roll-on, roll-off (ro-ro) facility.
"Our commitment to helping Iraq develop international standard port infrastructure continues to expand," said ICTSI senior vice president Hans-Ole Madsen.
