Amazon to launch express parcel delivery, says Wall Street Journal

AMAZON.COM will soon challenge UPS and Fedex with its own B2B express delivery service, according to the Wall Street Journal. Tenatively called "Shipping with Amazon" (SWA), it will be led in Los Angeles by suppliers selling through Amazon's online marketplace. The news follows years of behind-the-scenes Amazon development work to go into a business on which it heavily relies, like express deivery. Much speculation centres on Amazon's suspected intention to use its sheer volume of delivery needs to build its own express service. If history is a precedent, said the Wall Street Journal, Amazon would then spin that unit out to offer parcel delivery to the wider market as it has done with the Amazon Web Services server business. The paper also reported that, if successful, the pilot could be extended to either cities this year. |
