LUXEMBOURG-BASED all-cargo carrier Cargolux transported 2.4 million tonnes of fresh produce in 2017, an increase of 3.3 per cent year on year on the back of booming demand for fruit and vegetables.

Within the total volume of fresh produce flown, fruit accounted for 1.1 million tonnes of cargo, up 46 per cent year on year.

The main consumer markets for this produce are in Europe, the US and Asia, while key points of origin include Chile (blueberries), Peru (asparagus) and Kenya (beans). The carrier operates 20 flights out of Africa and South America to Europe each week, reported London's Air Cargo News.

Africa is a major exporter of fruit and vegetables for European consumers. In the other direction, fast-growing countries such as Ghana, Kenya and South Africa tend to import more high-tech goods, agricultural products and machinery, Cargolux noted.

The company expects demand for air transport of perishable goods to increase this year.
