DNV-GL has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) to Japanese shipping line MOL and South Korean shipbuilderSamsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for a bow windshield that they have jointly designed for ultra large containerships.
The newly developed bow windshield reduces the wind resistance on a ship's hull while the vessel is running, and it is expected to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by between two and four per cent, reported ShipInsight.
In the past, MOL developed and installed a bow windshield on a medium-sized containership, the 6,700-TEU MOL Marvel, in 2015. This bow windshield managed to reduce CO2 emissions by two per cent while the ship was sailing in 2017.
