THE Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA), the Puget Sound port authority covering Seattle and Tacoma, said a late Chinese New Year brought increased February cargo volumes as shippers moved cargo in advance of the holiday, reported New York's Maritime Professional.
Total container volumes grew six per cent in February year on year to 279,488 TEU. International volume, came in at 233,643 TEU, up 7.4 per cent year on year. Imports were up 13.4 per cent and exports were up 1.3 per cent at 108,638 TEU.
Domestic volumes decreased 0.7 per cent to 45,845 TEU in February. Alaska’s volumes were down 2.4 per cent due to soft market conditions. Hawaii volumes through the Pacific Northwest increased 7.8 per cent due to improved market conditions.
Overall total year-to-date volumes are down 5.2 per cent. Imports and exports declined 6.4 per cent and 2.2 per cent, respectively.
Breakbulk cargo volume grew 29.7 per cent year to date to 32,482 tonnes. At 21,763 units, auto volume was down eight per cent year to date, mirroring the overall decline in the North American auto import market.
In February, the the port authority received four new ZPMC super postpanamax cranes for Tacoma's Husky Terminal. While the NWSA already handles 13,000-TEU vessels, Pier 4 at Husky is being reconfigured to align with an adjacent pier, creating one contiguous berth capable of working two 18,000-TEU containerships simultaneously.
