QATAR's Port of Hamad has hit the one million TEU mark in under 14 months, one of the "fastest growth rate in the region" achieved in the midst of an economic blockade imposed on Qatar in June 2017, reports Doha's Gulf Times.

"In such a record time, Hamad Port today marks the handling of one million TEU coming from regional and global seaports via 22 direct navigation routes and 120 destinations," said Transport Minister Jassim Seif Ahmed al-Sulaiti.

Achieved well ahead of schedule, the rapid increase in the container handling "demonstrates its operational efficiency and relentless efforts toward holding a leading position among key regional and global ports, according to the plan overseen by the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC)".

Addressing the celebration of the achievement, the minister said: "This would not have been possible without His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani's vision."

The prime minister's directives played a key role in enhancing the ranking of the port and transforming it into a key regional logistics hub, he said.

Qatar Ports Management Company CEO Abdulla al-Khanji said: "The shipping routes that have been launched between Hamad Port and regional and international ports have provided additional reliable options and solutions for customers, playing a significant role in enhancing container handling operations and boosting trade via the port.

QTerminals CEO Neville Bissett has expressed optimism that Hamad Port would achieve another milestone by reaching the two million TEU mark by the end of 2018.

"We're actually hoping and we're anticipating that two million would be achieved this year, so we'll be looking at doing an additional one million TEU in a much shorter period of time; perhaps towards September, October, November we'll be looking at the two million TEU coming through Hamad Port," said Mr Bissett.
