THE southbound leg of the Europe to east coast of South America container shipping trade has experienced its first annual growth since 2013, reversing a three-year losing streak to reassert its dominance in 2017, according to Drewry's latest Container Insight Weekly.
The southbound trade achieved volume growth of 12 per cent last year to total 850,000 TEU, according to figures from Datamar cited by the London-based shipping consultancy.
By export region growth from the smaller Mediterranean market registered the highest growth by increasing 15 per cent to 250,000 TEU, while north Europe's exports to ECSA rose 11 per cent year on year to 600,000 TEU.
North Europe exports ended the year stronger than the Mediterranean region, expanding by 14 per cent in the fourth quarter, versus nine per cent growth, reported London's Port Technology International.
"Momentum is currently with the inbound trade to east coast South America driven by improving macro-economics in Brazil and Argentina," said Drewry. "However, given the overcapacity on this leg carriers will struggle to see any meaningful increase in revenue."
