DP World Peru has acquired Cosmos Agencia Maritima, a maritime and logistics services provider, for US$315.72 million.
The Cosmos Group owns Neptunia SA and Triton Transport SA and holds a 50 per cent stake in Terminales Portuarios Euroandinos S A at the port of Paita, the second largest container terminal in the nation.
Said DP World Group chairman Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem: "This acquisition supports our recent strategy of extending our core business into complementary sectors."
The Cosmos logistics division offers an integrated platform of solutions in activities related to foreign trade, product storage and distribution, as well as freight services that facilitate development and implementation of industry specific projects, reported Port Today, of Malaga, Spain.
DP World is already present in Peru by operating a container terminal in the port of Callao. The 1.2 million TEU facility is considered to be one of the most efficient and productive in the region, reporting 30 gross crane moves per hour on average.
The acquisition initially stoked fears among the local market that the consolidation of logistics assets in the hands of DP World might spark price wars. By acquiring the Cosmos Group, the global port operator obtains direct access to the customer base that includes mining and petroleum companies which account for the lion's share of Peru's export and import volumes.
DP World's integration of port services together with logistics solutions might trigger aggressive competition among the other market players, however, president of the National Port Authority Edgar Patino believes that heightened competition among the different logistics operators will serve to improve the efficiency of their services.
