IATA predicts freight demand up in 2018 despite peak congestion

THE International Air Transport Association (IATA) notes that air freight can provide shorter periods of recovery when manufacturers suffer delays in supply at peak periods in their business cycles.

IATA has reported a divergence between delivery times and air freight demand in recent months and noted current bottlenecks in global supply chains are most acute in capital goods, which are less likely to be transported by air, said Sydney's Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA).

In spite of the general increase in supplier delivery times remaining supportive of freight tonne kilometres (FTK) growth air freight volumes are not likely to grow at the double-digit rate suggested by the delivery times indicator alone.

IATA said while the upwards trend in freight volumes has slowed as the inventory restocking cycle has waned, yet, other indicators remain consistent with solid year-on-year FTK growth in the first half of this year.

The association predicts that FTK will rise by 4.5 per cent in 2018, broadly in line with the five-year average rate and "a robust outcome following the very strong performance in 2017".
