Oakland's 5-year plan envisions more cargo with new facilities

THE Port of Oakland has set its sights on boosting containerised cargo volumes by eight per cent over the next five years to raise volumes to 2.6 million TEU.
"We can grow, but we want our neighbours to grow with us," said Port of Oakland executive director Chris Lytle.
The plan is centred on two major projects: a 283,000-square foot refrigerated distribution centre called Cool Port Oakland, scheduled to open this summer. The second involves the development of a 440,000-square foot distribution centre at the nearby Seaport Logistics Complex.
At the airport, the plan intends to boost the number of domestic and international flights, including to destinations such as New York, Boston, Washington, Asia, Canada, and South America, reported American Shipper.
The plan also seeks to further reduce diesel particulate emissions from trucks and ports. According to port data, truck emissions declined by 98 per cent since 2009, while vessel emissions dropped by 76 per cent. The five-year plan commits an overall reduction of 85 per cent mainly through encouraging more ships to use shore-based electricity. The port is also planning a programme to install zero emissions equipment.
Another of the plans' goals is to promote new transload and refrigerated cargo capabilities to increase the discretionary intermodal cargo it handles to 15 per cent, growing refrigerated exports 10 per cent and imports by five per cent, and extending its net to capture market share in western grain and Midwest frozen meat exports.
