THE Port of Rotterdam Authority has started on a Container Exchange Route (CER) to link the container terminals, empty depots, railyards and distribution centres to the Maasvlakte dock.

The goal of this EUR175 million (US$216 million) project is to reduce exchange costs between the various companies and further improve connections with the European hinterland.

"The CER combines container streams, so trains, inland vessels and feeders no longer need to go to the different terminals," said port authority chief operating officer Ronald Paul.

"CER will improve links between container terminals at Maasvlakte and reduce congestion," he said.

Mr Paul said this will result in cost savings and improvements to the Port of Rotterdam's competitive position as a container hub.

The construction of the concrete road is part of the Container Exchange Route project. There will also be modification of IT systems and logistic agreements on how containers will be handled.

The Port Authority has contracted consortium KWS Infra & Van Hattum en Blankevoort to build the road outside the industrial parks of the container companies at Maasvlakte to be completed at the end of 2020.
