HYUNDAI Merchant Marine (HMM) has shelved negotiations with Israeli shipping line Zim to cooperate on services to the east coast of North America and will cease to operate on the route for now.

HMM had originally planned to deploy two 8,500 TEU vessels on Zim’s Z73 route service that calls at ports on the east coast of the North America.

SM Line had also earlier proposed to cooperate with HMM on services on this route, but no longer an affordable option to open additional routes since it started servicing the west coast of North America in May, reported BusinessKorea.

Until now HMM has been operating the route by borrowing vessels belonging to Maersk Line and MSC since April 2017.

HMM now plans to switch its focus to ports in Europe and India. From April 8, it will launch an independent route connecting Busan, Europe, Rotterdam and Hamburg, with 10 vessels of 4,600 TEU. So far, the company has been providing European services by taking slots on Maersk and MSC vessels.

HMM’s strategy is to secure the necessary shippers in advance for large vessels to be added to routes in future, while operating its independent route with 4,600 TEU vessels.

Currently receiving support from the South Korean government, HMM is preparing to order large ships with a capacity of 22,000 TEU to meet the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) environmental regulations by 2020. The carrier is considering a plan to deploy the new 22,000 TEU ships on the European routes.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Merchant Marine currently operates seven routes to India. The shipping line is expected to provide its own services through the rearrangement of its India routes instead of through cooperation with other shipping lines.
