SHARJAH-headquartered port operator Gulftainer has announced that its subsidiary, GT USA has reached an agreement with the US state of Delaware to operate and develop the port of Wilmington over a period of 50 years.
Gulftainer said it would invest US$580 million over the next nine years, including in the development of a new 1.2 million TEU container terminal alongside the port's existing 350,000 TEU capacity terminal, reported Singapore's Splash 24/7.
"We are keen to position Wilmington as the major gateway port to the US mid-Atlantic states," said Gulftainer executive board chairman Badr Jafar.
The terminal concession is a big win for the United Arab Emirates, after compatriot DP World's bid to operate terminals in the US was blocked by politicians a decade ago. Gulftainer already has one US port concession at Canaveral in Florida, which it won in 2015.
