SOUTH Korea's Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) is to take delivery of the world's largest containership, HMM Algericas, the first in a series of seven 23,964-TEU sister ships built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering. These newbuilds are 208 TEU bigger than the current largest box ships afloat, the MSC Gulsun and its five sister ships.

The 400-metre-long HMM Algericas features 24 rows across. This newbuild series will all be delivered by the end of September when they will join the Asia-North Europe FE4 loop of THE Alliance, which HMM will become a member of on April 1, reported Singapore's Splash 247.

In addition to HMM, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC)CMA CGM and Evergreen have also opted for these 24-row across goliaths. Alphaliner predicts other shipping lines, such as Hapag-LloydCosco and Japan's Ocean Network Express (ONE) will follow suit and also place orders for these monoliths of the seas.
