PORT of Virginia container throughput rebounded strongly in March, reversing a January decline and flat year-on-year growth in February.

March was the port's second best month for container volume on record, coming five months after a new all-time high was set in October.

The port last month moved 252,230 TEU, an increase of 8.7 per cent compared to the same month a year earlier, The Virginian-Pilot reported.

Virginia Port Authority CEO John Reinhart said: "We expect volumes to continue to climb and as a result we are focusing on ways to improve the delivery of service to the motor carriers and our ocean carriers, specifically at VIG [Virginia International Gateway], where transactions have been slowed as the result of our capacity expansion project there."

Loaded import units in March were up 13.5 per cent from the same month a year ago, while export loaded unit volumes rose 6.8 per cent. Rail container volume was up 2.1 per cent, while truck container volume grew 13.2 per cent. Breakbulk tonnage was up 23.7 per cent.

Container throughput for the first nine months of the July-June fiscal year increased by 4.3 per cent from the same period a year ago.
