HONG KONG International Airport's (HKIA) cargo volume decreased 2.5 per cent in March year on year to 422,000 tonnes, the airport authority announced.

The decline was mainly attributed to a 12 per cent year-on-year drop in exports with South Korea and Europe, which posted the biggest declines while imports increased 13 per cent.

Yet HKIA volume was up 4.2 per cent year on year to 1.15 million tonnes and on a rolling 12-month basis, the five million tonnes represented a 7.5 per cent increase year on year.

Also 112,000 tonnes of airmail was handled in 2017, HKIA's total cargo and airmail throughput exceeded five million tonnes for the first time.

Passenger traffic surged, rising 8.5 per cent to 6.39 million year on year.

HKIA was ranked the world's busiest cargo airport by Airports Council International for 2017, occupying the top spot for the eighth consecutive year. In 2017, it achieved record-breaking cargo throughput of 4.94 million tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 9.2 per cent.
