THE Port of Long Beach first quarter container throughput soared 19.4 per cent year on year to 1.9 million TEU while the neighbouring Port of Los Angeles suffered a 5.7 per cent decline to 2.1 million TEU.

In March, Long Beach cargo volume was up 13.8 per cent to 575,258 TEU, compared to LA's March decline of 27 per cent to 577,865 TEU, a drop blamed on shippers moving record-breaking volumes in February ahead of the Chinese New Year's annual factory shutdowns in Asia.

Said Long Beach port director Mario Cordero: "Our March cargo jumped despite the shipping slowdown during the Lunar New Year holiday in China. "One of the most encouraging signs throughout this surge in cargo last year and this year is the operational efficiency at our marine terminals. We are handling record levels of cargo with no delays," said Mr Cordero.

Exports grew 18.3 per cent to 142,419 TEU. The large number of imported goods demanded by American consumers meant container ships hauled 165,015 TEU of empties.

"Our business development trips are bringing us more trade activity," said Lou Anne Bynum, president, of the Long Beach Harbour Commission. "We'll see favourable responses during our visits with our overseas partners.

"We're comparing our numbers to an extraordinary 29 per cent volume gain last March so a decline is not unexpected," she said.

Said LA port director Gene Seroka: "Lunar New Year timing and subsequent cancelled or reduced sailings played a factor. We continue to focus on our efforts to make facility and technology enhancements that position us for long-term efficiency and productivity gains."

LA's March imports dropped 29.2 per cent to 264,460 TEU compared to the previous year. Exports fell 14.6 per cent to 163,706 TEU while empties dropped 33 per cent to 149,699 TEU.
