THE Port of Halifax has docked its largest vessel with the arrival of the 14,414-TEU CMA CGM T Jefferson, which sails in the weekly Ocean Alliance AWE3 service from South Asia to the North American east coast.

The Halifax Port Authority is moving towards completion of a deep-water berth extension that will accommodate two vessels of 350 metres simultaneously, reports the American Journal of Transportation.

Singapore terminal operator PSA Halifax has ordered new topside infrastructure, a ship-to-shore super postpanamax crane, bringing the total number of such quay cranes to five. The extension project is on time and on budget with completion in the first half of this year.

"We have everything in place to handle the larger ships now calling on the east coast of North America," said PSA Halifax CEO Kim Holtermand.

"The arrival of the first vessel over 14,000 TEU is a significant milestone for all of the partners that make up the Port of Halifax and the larger port city community," said Halifax Port Authority CEO Allan Gray.
