2M Alliance cancels more Asia-Europe services due to virus pandemic

2M Alliance partners Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) are slashing more of their Asia-Europe container shipping services, as consumer demand dives amid the coronavirus pandemic that has many of the world's major western markets in lockdown mode.
Supply disruption in China already forced carriers to cut dozens of sailings in February and March. And Sea-Intelligence forecasts more cuts to come from the rival Ocean Alliance and THE Alliance, reported The Maritime Executive of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The new cuts include a temporary suspension of the 2M AE20/Dragon and AE2/Swan services for all of the second quarter, beginning with the sailings of the MSC Venice and the MSC Sixin. The MSC Sixin is one of MSC's new megamax-24 class of ships, the largest of their kind at 23,500-23,700 TEU each.
The freezing of these two services alone removes one-fifth of capacity on the trade lane, according to Danish shipping consultancy Sea-Intelligence. "Additional blank sailings on other services might be announced during the coming weeks, depending on the market demand. We will keep you posted in due course," MSC said in a statement.
Analysts expect containerised trade to contract this year due to strict public health measures and damper consumer demand in the west.
