North American rail freight volume down 20.1pc to 580,062 carloads

COMBINED North American rail freight traffic for the week ending April 11 was 580,062 carloads and intermodal units was down 20.1 per cent year on year, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
North American rail volume for the first 15 weeks of 2020 was 9,666,804 carloads and intermodal units, down 7.7 per cent compared with 2019.
US rail traffic for the week was 412,503 carloads and intermodal units was down 21.9 per cent year on year. Carloads for the week ending February 22 were 232,869 carloads, were down 9.3 per cent, while US weekly intermodal volume stood at 249,821 containers and trailers, down six per cent.
One of the 10 carload commodity groups posted an increase compared with the same week in 2019. Grain was up 595 carloads to 22,237.
Commodity groups that posted decreases compared with the same week in 2019 included coal, down 29,609 carloads to 52,468; motor vehicles and parts, down 15,521 carloads, to 2,185; and metallic ores and metals, down 5,982 carloads, to 17,949.
Canadian railways reported 73,556 carloads for the week, down 13.6 per cent, and 66,088 intermodal units, down 10.6 per cent. For the first 15 weeks of 2020, Canadian railways reported cumulative rail volume of 2,116,131 carloads, containers and trailers, down 4.3 per cent.
Mexican railways reported 16,433 carloads for the week, down 26 per cent, and 11,482 intermodal units, down 31.7 per cent. Cumulative volume on Mexican railways for the first 15 weeks of 2020 was 537,739 carloads and intermodal containers and trailers, down 1,7 per cent year on year.
