Hong Kong's Hacis to convert western Pearl to air cargo

HACTL's logistics arm, the Hong Kong Air Cargo Industry Service (Hacis), and Chu Kong Shipping (CKS) have agreed to join logistics operations on the western side of the Pearl River Delta (PRD).
An electronics manufacturing cluster is based along the western shores of the Pearl between Zhuhai and Guangzhou.
"Many of these are heavy users of ocean freight. Hacis and CKS see the potential to convert much of this to air freight, once the Hong Kong Zhuhai bridge opens, providing a fast cost-effective connection to Hong Kong airport.
The first project will be the opening of a new inland cargo depot in Zhuhai Free Trade Zone, in collaboration with CKS subsidiary Civet (Zhuhai) Logistics, which operates a port facility in Zhuhai Free Trade Zone.
This brings the number of Hacis depots in southern mainland China to nine.
Hacis' latest depot will enable it to realise its long-stated ambition to further develop its SuperLink China Direct (SLCD) road feeder service network, and establish a strong local presence in the Zhuhai area, to take full advantage of the imminent opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB).
The depot will cover the Macau and Zhuhai conurbations.
All Hacis depots are linked with Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) via scheduled express road feeders, said the HACIS statement. The opening of the new bridge will cut trucking times between the western PRD and HKIA by two thirds.
"Hacis has a long-term plan to expand its SLCD services to the western PRD, further enhancing HKIA as a regional air cargo hub and transshipment centre," said Hacis managing director Vivien Lau.
"This new depot will enable us to fully support airlines wishing to extend their networks to the cities in western PRD," she said.
"Civet's advantageous location next to the HZMB, and its considerable experience in running port facilities in Zhuhai, makes it an ideal partner to maximise SLCD's opportunities in the area," she said.
Said Chu Kong Shipping general manager Roger Cheng: "The partnership with Hacis will further promote multi-modal logistics in the western PRD, and assist in the development of the Greater Bay Area, in line with Central Government Policy. We are also exploring mutual cooperation in other ports such as Doumen."
