Canadian Pacific Railway strike appears imminent

CANADA's railway Teamsters and electricians unions have refused to ratify in a membership vote on the Canadian Pacific Railway's latest labour contract offer, paving the way to a legal strike this week.
Meanwhile, the same unions at the larger Canadian National Railway ratified a five-year contract, thus averting a strike.
A minimum of 72 hours' notice needs to be provided before any work stoppage can occur. To date (Saturday), no such notice has been issued, said CP.
There are approximately 3,000 conductors and engineers represented by the TCRC. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) represents approximately 360 signal maintainers.
CP said is disappointed with the outcome of the vote given that both final offers provided for significant improvements to wages, benefits and working conditions that are consistent with agreements recently reached with other CP unions in both the United States and Canada.
"CP will be meeting with both unions later today to discuss next steps," said a company statement.
