KENYA Airways has launched the first cabin cargo repurposing of a B787 Dreamliner into a preighter on February 9, reports Mumbai's Logistics Update Africa.
The project began December 2020 and was completed in January 2021. The project is collaboration between Kenya Airways and Avianor.
"KQ's purpose is to contribute to the sustainable development of Africa. The preighter will enable us to bridge businesses & enhance connectivity. Kenya will export more goods to our partners across the globe & stimulate business for local suppliers," said Kenya Airways CEO Allan Kilavuka.
The remodeled cabin can carry up to 16 tonnes of cargo, enabling the aircraft to reach its maximum payload while cargo operation of 46 tonnes.
Fresh Produce Consortium of Kenya (FPC Kenya) CEO Okisegere Ojepat declared how freighter capacity since the onset of the Covid crisis has hit the perishable and flower exporters in Kenya.
"The horticulture sector's contribution to Kenya's economy cannot be downplayed. It is a major foreign exchange earner and provides employment opportunities to about 350,000 directly and supports over six million livelihoods," said Mr Ojepat.
