Logistics difficulties deter use of strike-prone Port of Montreal

THE Montreal Port Authority (MPA) hopes the truce between the dockers' union CUPE 375 and the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) holds, but concedes that businesses continue to have problems with the Port of Montreal, reports the American Journal of Transportation.

A month before the end of the truce, the MPA has found several businesses that use the port are moving containerised goods to other ports, and that other businesses will soon do the same if a new work stoppage occurs.

Previously, backlogs and delays caused by a dock strike in 2020 cost wholesalers US$600 million in sales over a two month period.

The work stoppages have significantly affected operations in the container sector as well. More than 20 container ships have been diverted to competing ports, with 80,000 TEU grounded or rerouted.

It took over three months to clear these backlogs and return to what could be considered normal operations. Over 6,000 transportation and logistics firms in Greater Montreal are directly or indirectly affected.

There is also the matter of handling critical cargo needed to fight the Covid crisis. For example, the CargO2ai, a system that uses artificial intelligence to accelerate the delivery of containers containing critical medical equipment, handled more than 2,500 containers. During the general strike, which lasted August 10 to 22, 2020, not a single critical container was moved.
