FRENCH shipping giant CMA CGM, owner of CEVA Logistics, is to launch its new air cargo service on March 8 from Belgium's Liege Airport to Chicago-O'Hare.

CMA CGM Air Cargo is operated by Air Belgium under its Air Operators Certificate (AOC), which is based out of Brussels South Charleroi Airport. However, the four A330-200Fs acquired by CMA CGM from Qatar Airways will be based out of Liege.

This arrangement with Air Belgium will allow CMA CGM access to the air cargo market much faster than if it had to go through the full process of obtaining its own AOC, reports London's Simple Flying.

Company chairman and CEO Rodolphe Saade said in a statement that the new division was "a major milestone in the development of our logistics services".

The second Airbus A330-200F flight to Chicago-O'Hare will take place on March 16.

The CMA CGM Group has appointed ECS Group, a leading GSA, to be in charge of marketing the air cargo services. It has also decided to develop a blocked space agreement on board its aircraft with its subsidiary CEVA Logistics.

Xavier Eiglier, director of CMA CGM Air Cargo, commented: "The launch of CMA CGM Air Cargo represents a significant event in developing a comprehensive range of logistics services for the CMA CGM Group's clients. These initial destinations in the United States demonstrate our desire to offer our clients international coverage, serving the biggest freight airports in the heart of major economic areas."
