Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned Russia is on the brink of cutting ties with the EU if impending sanctions against Russia occur, reports Bloomberg News.

"If we see again, as has happened many times before, that sanctions are imposed that pose risks for our economy, including in the most sensitive areas," said Mr Lavrov.

"We don¡¯t want to isolate ourselves from peaceful life, but we have to be ready for that. If you want peace you have to prepare for war," said Mr Lavrov.

The EU is working to sanction Russia over the imprisonment of opposition leader Alexey Navalny. Mr Navalny was sentenced to two years and eight months on February 2 for violating the probation terms of an earlier suspended fraud conviction.

Mr Navalny also had a near-fatal poison experience, which he blames on the Kremlin. His allies have urged the EU, UK, and US to sanction 35 top Russian officials and business figures.

Russia denies any role in poisoning Mr Navalny, accusing him and his aides of working in the interests of foreign governments.

Authorities have jailed more than 11,000 people since last month who have protested in support of Mr Navalny.

The new US administration of President Joe Biden has declared it will work with allies on possible action against Russia.
