SAUDI's King Abdullah Port, 87 miles north of Jeddah, saw a 6.6 per cent increase in container throughput and a 12.4 per cent increase in bulk and general cargo, according to port officials.

The port reached 2.1 million TEU, growing by more than 100,000 TEU compared to 2019, achieving a remarkable 16 per cent increase in the number of imported containers.

Bulk and general cargo reached 3.3 million tons, compared to just 2.9 million tons in 2019, highlighting a strengthening of Saudi Arabia¡¯s logistics competitiveness and contributing to increasing non-oil export volumes.

The port continued to play a vital role in revitalising the logistics sector and maritime trade during the Covid crisis.

Pharmaceutical and medical supplies saw an immaculate 72 per cent increase during the first eight months of 2020. There was also a 15 per cent increase in building material imports.

Previously, the port received three of the world¡¯s largest containerships and was selected as the primary logistics terminal on the Red Sea for Maersk and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).

The port is the region¡¯s first port to be owned, developed, and operated by the private sector as its fully owned by the Ports Development Company.

The port has a current throughput of six million TEU and offers integrated services to importers and exports.
