STATISTICS from the Port of Santos Authority (SPA) show that container volumes at the Brazilian port increased by 1.6 per cent over the previous record of 2019 with 4.27 million TEU.
In December, the port precinct moved 437,400 TEU, a 20 per cent growth in container handling compared to the same month of 2019 and an increase of 9.5 per cent compared to November, which had already recorded the best performance in a month with 399,300 TEU.
Total cargo throughput amounted to 146.6 million tonnes last year, up 9.4 per cent over 2019, reports Colchester's Seatrade Maritime News.
Said SPA operations chief Marcelo Ribeiro: "The historical record of cargo movement reflects the recovery of the economy as well as the measures implemented by the port management, in line with the Federal Government's sanitary guidelines.
"Moreover, in a pandemic scenario, the result shows the strength of agribusiness and the resilience of the port in maintaining the flow of goods, that reflects positively on the participation of the Santos complex in the country's commercial chain."
