BUREAU Veritas, a Paris-based quality assurance company, has granted approval in principle (AP) for the Trade Wings 2,500 design, a wind and electric-powered containership, reports New York's Marine Link.

The ship will save an average of 35 per cent CO2-equivalent emissions compared to a conventional design.

The 2,500-TEU Trade Wings ship design combines six Oceanwings wind-assisted propulsion sails with liquefied natural gas (LNG)-electric propulsion with pods.

The wing sails are installed on a sliding mechanism that retracts them partially while the vessel is in port. The LNG power plant is designed with pure gas four-strokes gensets.

The design is meant for short sea shipping operations in Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and China. It can also operate on transatlantic trades.
